Winter Wellness Routine: Simple Habits for the Dark Months

LipNutrix natural weight management food supplement, 60 capsule bottle

The clocks have gone back, the mornings are dark and by 4.30pm it already feels like bedtime. If your good habits tend to slip between November and February, you are far from alone. Shorter days, colder weather and a busy run-up to Christmas make it harder to eat well, move often and sleep properly.

The good news is that a winter wellness routine does not need to be complicated. A handful of simple, repeatable habits can help you feel more like yourself through the darker months. This guide walks you through what to focus on, with a checklist and an example day you can copy.

Why winter knocks your routine off track

Most of us notice the same changes as the nights draw in:

  • Less daylight: it is harder to get up, and the dark evenings make the sofa very tempting.
  • Less movement: walks, park runs and after-school trips outdoors often stop when it is cold and wet.
  • Comfort eating: heavier meals, more snacks and fewer fresh vegetables are common in winter.
  • Disrupted sleep: late nights, screens and heating that is too high can all affect how well you rest.
  • A busier diary: November and December bring work parties, school events and Christmas shopping.

None of this means you have failed. It simply means your routine needs a winter version: one that works with the season, not against it.

The five pillars of a winter wellness routine

1. Get outside in daylight

Try to get outdoors for at least 10 to 20 minutes during daylight hours, ideally in the morning or at lunchtime. A brisk walk to school, a lap of the block at lunch or a coffee on a park bench all count. It is also a simple way to give your day a clear start.

2. Keep moving, even when it is cold

The NHS recommends that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, plus strength activities on at least 2 days. In winter, break it into small chunks: three 10-minute walks a day, a 20-minute home workout video, dancing in the kitchen or carrying the shopping home. Our guide to reaching 150 minutes a week has more easy ideas.

3. Build warm, balanced meals

Winter is the perfect time for soups, stews, curries and traybakes. Fill half your plate with vegetables, add a portion of protein (eggs, fish, chicken, beans, lentils or tofu) and choose wholegrains such as oats, brown rice or wholemeal bread. Seasonal UK vegetables like carrots, parsnips, leeks, cabbage, kale and swede are cheap and filling. Aim for your 5 A Day and around 30 g of fibre a day, which is what the NHS recommends for adults.

4. Protect your sleep

Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. Keep regular bed and wake times, even at weekends, dim the lights and put your phone away an hour before bed, and keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet. If you are tempted to stay up late in the dark evenings, a fixed “lights off” time helps.

5. Remember vitamin D

From around October to March, the UK sun is not strong enough for our bodies to make vitamin D from sunlight. The NHS advises that everyone should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during autumn and winter. If you live in Ireland, check the HSE’s guidance for your age group. Food sources include oily fish, eggs and fortified cereals and spreads.

Your winter wellness checklist

Use this as a simple weekly check-in. You do not need to tick every box every day: aim for most of them, most days.

  • 10 to 20 minutes outdoors in daylight
  • Around 30 minutes of movement, in one go or in short bursts
  • Strength activity (squats, wall press-ups, resistance bands) on 2 days a week
  • Vegetables or salad with lunch and dinner
  • Protein and fibre at every meal
  • 6 to 8 glasses of water, tea or other low-sugar drinks
  • Vitamin D (10 micrograms) taken in autumn and winter
  • Screens off an hour before bed
  • 7 to 9 hours of sleep
  • Your daily supplements taken at the same times each day, if you use them

An example winter day

Here is how those habits might fit around a busy working or school-run day. Swap the times to suit your own life.

Time Habit Simple idea
7am Wake up and hydrate Open the curtains, drink a glass of water, take your morning supplements
7.30am Warm breakfast Porridge with berries and a spoon of nut butter, or eggs on wholemeal toast
8.30am Daylight Walk all or part of the school run or commute
12.30pm Lunch and a walk Vegetable soup with beans or lentils, then 10 minutes outside
4pm Afternoon reset A glass of water, a piece of fruit or yoghurt, a short stretch
6.30pm Balanced dinner A traybake with chicken or chickpeas and plenty of root vegetables
7.30pm Move A 15 to 20-minute home workout or a family dance
9.30pm Wind down Screens off, warm shower, book or calm music

How to keep going when motivation dips

Motivation is always lower in winter, so rely on habits instead. A few tips that make a real difference:

  • Anchor new habits to old ones. Take your supplement after brushing your teeth, or go for a walk straight after lunch.
  • Plan for bad weather. Keep a waterproof coat by the door and have a 10-minute indoor workout saved on your phone.
  • Batch cook on Sundays. A big pot of soup or chilli means a healthy meal is ready on busy evenings.
  • Be kind to yourself. One takeaway or a missed walk does not undo your week. Just pick up again at the next meal or the next morning.
  • Track it. Ticking off a simple checklist, like the one above, is surprisingly motivating.

Where LipNutrix fits into your winter routine

If you like having a daily ritual to keep you on track, LipNutrix is our stimulant-free daily food supplement. Each 2-capsule serving contains chlorella (270 mg), spirulina (200 mg), turmeric (200 mg), chitosan (100 mg) and psyllium (250 mcg). There is no caffeine and it is not a medicine or a magic pill. It is a small habit that sits alongside balanced meals, regular movement and good sleep.

The way you take it suits a winter routine well: 1 capsule in the morning and 1 at around 4pm, each with a glass of water. Never take more than 2 capsules a day. Pairing the 4pm capsule with an afternoon glass of water and a short stretch gives you two simple checkpoints in the day. Read how to take LipNutrix for the full routine.

If tiredness is your biggest winter struggle, our Magnesium Complex 4-in-1 combines magnesium bisglycinate, threonate, malate and taurate. Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal muscle function. Take 2 capsules a day.

LipNutrix contains chitosan, which comes from crustaceans, so it is not suitable if you have a shellfish allergy, or for vegans, vegetarians, under-18s, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Frequently asked questions

What is a good winter wellness routine?

A good winter wellness routine is simple and repeatable: get outside in daylight, aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, eat warm balanced meals with plenty of vegetables and fibre, keep regular sleep times and consider a daily 10 microgram vitamin D supplement in autumn and winter, as the NHS advises.

Should I take vitamin D in winter?

The NHS advises that everyone should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during autumn and winter, because the sun is not strong enough for the body to make enough from October to March. If you live in Ireland, check the HSE guidance for your age group.

How can I stay active when it is cold and dark?

Break activity into short chunks, such as three 10-minute walks a day, and keep a few indoor options ready, like a home workout video, stairs, resistance bands or dancing in the kitchen. Wrap up warm, wear something reflective after dark and add strength activities on 2 days a week.

How do I take LipNutrix as part of my daily routine?

Take 2 capsules a day, but not at the same time: 1 in the morning and 1 at around 4pm, each with a glass of water. Do not take more than 2 capsules a day. LipNutrix is a stimulant-free food supplement that sits alongside balanced meals, regular movement and good sleep.

Can I take LipNutrix and Magnesium Complex together?

Many people use more than one food supplement. Follow the directions on each label and do not exceed the recommended daily dose. If you take medication, have a medical condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking any supplement.
