What it is

What is spirulina?

Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is often called a blue-green alga, but it is actually a type of cyanobacteria. It grows in warm, alkaline lakes and is farmed worldwide. Its blue pigment, phycocyanin, gives it a distinctive blue-green colour, and it has a soft cell wall, so it is easy to process.

Nutrition

What does spirulina contain?

Spirulina is naturally high in protein by weight and contains chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals and plant pigments. Supplement servings are small, so the amounts are modest compared with your daily diet.

Spirulina contains a form of vitamin B12 that the body can’t use well, so it isn’t a reliable B12 source for vegans. It doesn’t have authorised health claims in the UK.
