What it is

What is chitosan?

Chitosan is made from chitin, a natural substance found in the shells of crustaceans such as shrimp, crab and lobster. It is used in food supplements and other products.

The facts

What the rules say about chitosan

Chitosan has one authorised health claim in the UK: chitosan contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. This claim only applies to products that provide 3 g of chitosan a day.

LipNutrix contains 100 mg of chitosan per daily serving, which is well below that amount, so this claim does not apply to LipNutrix and we don’t make it.

Safety

Who should avoid chitosan?

  • Anyone with a shellfish or crustacean allergy
  • Vegans and vegetarians, as it comes from animal shells
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you take medication, as chitosan may affect how some medicines and fat-soluble vitamins are absorbed

Frequently asked questions

More answers in our supplement FAQs.

Where does chitosan come from?

Chitosan is made from chitin, found in the shells of crustaceans such as shrimp and crab.

Is LipNutrix suitable if I have a shellfish allergy?

No. LipNutrix contains chitosan, a crustacean derivative, so it isn’t suitable for anyone with a shellfish or crustacean allergy.

Does chitosan have a health claim?

Yes, but only at 3 g a day: chitosan contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. LipNutrix contains 100 mg, so the claim doesn’t apply.
