What is chlorella?
Chlorella (Chlorella vulgaris) is a microscopic green alga that grows in fresh water. Its deep green colour comes from chlorophyll, the pigment plants use to capture sunlight. Chlorella has a tough outer cell wall, so supplements usually use “broken cell wall” chlorella, sold as tablets, capsules or powder.

What does chlorella contain?
Chlorella naturally contains protein, chlorophyll, and a range of vitamins, minerals and plant pigments. Supplement servings are small, so they add only modest amounts of nutrients compared with everyday food.
Chlorella doesn’t have authorised health claims in the UK. Be wary of products that say it will “detox” your body or burn fat.
