Weight Gain After Having Children: Why There’s No Rush to Bounce Back

Three smiling women in activewear on a beach, part of the TopNew Wellness community

Your body has just grown, carried and given birth to a whole new person. Yet within weeks, many mums feel pressure to “bounce back”: from social media, celebrity photos, well-meaning relatives and, most of all, from themselves. If that sounds familiar, this post is for you. Weight gain after having children is normal, and losing it is a journey, not a race. Taking it slowly is not only kinder to yourself, it’s also the way to results that last.

A note from Mari, our founder

“I’m a mum of three, and after each baby I put everyone else’s needs before my own. Between sleepless nights and busy days, my own nutrition and wellbeing came last. I remember feeling I should have my old body back already, and feeling like I was failing when I didn’t. What helped wasn’t a crash diet. It was small, steady habits that fitted around family life, and being a lot kinder to myself. That’s why I started TopNew Wellness.”

Why weight gain after pregnancy is normal

  • Your body needed it. During pregnancy your body stores extra energy to support your baby and, if you choose to, breastfeeding.
  • Hormones take time to settle. Hormone levels change dramatically after birth and can take months to rebalance.
  • Sleep is in short supply. Broken sleep increases hunger and cravings and makes healthy choices much harder.
  • Life has changed. Less time for yourself, grabbing food on the go, and little energy for exercise are completely normal in the early months.
  • Your body has changed shape. Your tummy muscles, pelvic floor and posture all need time to recover.

It took around nine months for your body to change during pregnancy. It’s reasonable to give it at least that long, and often longer, to find its new normal.

Why you shouldn’t rush to lose the baby weight

Crash diets and intense workouts can be tempting when you want quick results, but in the months after birth they can do more harm than good:

  • Your body needs good nutrition to recover from birth and to give you energy for caring for your baby.
  • If you’re breastfeeding, strict dieting is not recommended. Speak to your midwife or health visitor about healthy eating while feeding.
  • Starting high-impact exercise too early can strain your pelvic floor and tummy muscles.
  • Rapid weight loss usually comes back, often bringing feelings of guilt and frustration with it.
  • The pressure itself is exhausting, and you already have enough on your plate.

Slow and steady really does win. Small, healthy changes you can keep up are what lead to sustainable results.

A gentle, realistic approach

In the first weeks: recover and rest

Focus on healing, feeding your baby and resting when you can. Eat regular, nourishing meals and drink plenty of water, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Gentle walks with the pram and pelvic floor exercises can usually start as soon as you feel ready.

After your postnatal check

Your 6 to 8 week postnatal check with your GP is a good time to talk about exercise and your recovery. If you had a caesarean or a difficult birth, recovery may take longer. Once you get the go-ahead, you can slowly build up your activity.

Over the following months: build habits that fit family life

  • Walk with your baby. Pram walks are free, get you outdoors and count towards the 150 minutes of weekly activity recommended for adults.
  • Try postnatal classes. Many leisure centres and community groups offer mum-and-baby fitness or yoga.
  • Add gentle strength work at home, such as squats, glute bridges and wall push-ups, when your body feels ready.
  • Keep healthy snacks to hand: fruit, yoghurt, nuts, oatcakes and vegetable sticks for one-handed eating.
  • Batch cook soups, stews and curries when you have help or a spare hour.
  • Drink water every time you feed or change your baby.
  • Accept help and rest whenever you can. Sleep supports your health as much as food and exercise.

Be kind to yourself

Your body has done something incredible. Try to focus on how you feel, your energy and strength, not just the number on the scales. Avoid comparing yourself with others, especially on social media, where pictures rarely show the full story.

If you’re feeling low, anxious or overwhelmed, you’re not alone, and it’s not a sign of failure. Talk to your health visitor, midwife or GP. Postnatal depression is common and treatable.

Where LipNutrix can fit in, when the time is right

LipNutrix is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. When you’ve finished breastfeeding and you’re ready to focus on your own routine, and after checking with your GP if you have any health conditions or take medication, LipNutrix can be one simple daily habit within your healthy lifestyle.

It’s a stimulant-free daily food supplement with chlorella, spirulina, turmeric, chitosan and psyllium. There’s no prescription and no caffeine: just 1 capsule in the morning and 1 at around 4pm, alongside balanced meals and regular movement. For busy mums, the routine is easy to fit around family life: one capsule with breakfast and one as part of a 4pm afternoon reset. It isn’t a quick fix. It’s a small, steady habit for the longer journey.

Your gentle postnatal checklist

  • I’m giving my body time to recover
  • I’ve had my 6 to 8 week postnatal check before starting harder exercise
  • I’m eating regular, nourishing meals
  • I’m drinking plenty of water
  • I’m walking with my baby when I can
  • I’m resting and accepting help
  • I’m focusing on progress, not perfection
