What it is
What is psyllium?
Psyllium comes from the outer husk of the seeds of Plantago ovata, a plant grown mainly in India. It is almost pure fibre, mostly soluble fibre, which forms a gel when mixed with water. It is used as a fibre supplement and in gluten-free baking.

How much fibre do you need?
The NHS recommends adults eat 30 g of fibre a day, but most people manage much less. Food first is best: oats, wholegrains, beans, lentils, fruit and vegetables. Read our psyllium and fibre guide for a simple 30 g meal plan.

Safety
Taking psyllium safely
- Always take psyllium powder with plenty of water, as it swells
- Start with a small amount and build up slowly to avoid wind and bloating
- Take fibre supplements at least 2 hours apart from medicines
- Speak to your GP first if you have difficulty swallowing or a bowel condition
