Many people find that managing their weight feels harder after 40. That’s normal, and the good news is that a few habits make a real difference.
What changes after 40
- Less muscle: without regular strength work, muscle gradually declines, so you use a little less energy at rest.
- Busier lives: work, children and caring for parents can leave less time for cooking and exercise.
- Sleep changes: sleep can become lighter, and for women perimenopause can disrupt it further.
The habits that matter most
- Lift something. Strength exercises on at least 2 days a week help maintain muscle. Bodyweight exercises at home count.
- Prioritise protein. Include a portion at every meal.
- Walk more. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity a week.
- Watch portions, not just foods. Use the balanced plate: half vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter wholegrains.
- Protect sleep. Aim for 7 to 9 hours.
- Get a health check. The free NHS Health Check is offered to adults in England aged 40 to 74 every 5 years.

It’s a food supplement, so it supports your routine rather than doing the work for you. If you take medication, check with your GP first. Read more about LipNutrix.
