“Boost your metabolism” is one of the most common promises in the wellness world, and one of the most misunderstood. Here’s what metabolism really means and what you can influence.
What is metabolism?
Metabolism is the sum of all the chemical processes that keep you alive, from breathing to repairing cells. The energy you use each day comes from three main parts: your resting energy use (the biggest share), the energy used to digest food, and the energy you use moving, from exercise to walking to the shops.
What affects how much energy you use?
- Body size and muscle: muscle uses more energy than fat, even at rest.
- Age: many people gradually lose muscle as they get older, unless they keep it with strength training.
- Daily movement: steps, stairs, housework and standing all add up, often more than a single workout.
- Sleep: short sleep is linked with feeling hungrier and less active the next day.
What you can do
- Do strength exercises on at least 2 days a week, as the NHS recommends.
- Build up to 150 minutes of moderate activity a week.
- Include protein at each meal to help maintain muscle.
- Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
Where do supplements fit?
No food supplement can “rev up” your metabolism. In the UK, only authorised health claims can be made about foods and supplements, and they’re tied to specific nutrients at specific amounts. A supplement like LipNutrix is best seen as one small, consistent habit inside a bigger routine of good food, movement and rest.
